Private candidate guidance

Coursework & NEA

Many qualifications are assessed entirely by written examinations, while others include Non-Examination Assessment (NEA), coursework, a spoken component or a practical endorsement. We can support selected arrangements, but they must be agreed with us before you book your exams.

i
Please contact us before booking.

NEA, coursework, spoken components and practical endorsements cannot be accepted automatically. We must first check the subject, exam board, specification, evidence, marking and authentication arrangements.

What we can consider

When we may accept coursework or NEA

Acceptance is subject to an individual review and written confirmation from our exams team.

CF

Carry forward from a previous series

We may be able to carry forward an NEA mark, coursework result, spoken-language result or practical endorsement that you completed in a previous exam series, where the awarding body allows it.

  • You must be re-taking the relevant qualification.
  • We will require evidence of the previous result.
  • The correct carry-forward entry option must be available.
DL

Recognised distance-learning provider

We may accept work completed through a distance-learning provider such as NEC, CloudLearn or Oxford Open Learning, provided the provider can supervise, mark, verify and authenticate the work correctly.

  • The provider must follow the relevant specification.
  • Marks and authentication records must be supplied.
  • Acceptance must be agreed before the exam entry is made.
PT

Private tuition

If you are working with a private tutor, email us before booking. We can only consider the work where a suitably qualified and approved tutor can supervise, mark and authenticate it in line with awarding-body requirements.

  • Do not book until we have confirmed acceptance.
  • We may request the tutor’s qualifications and centre details.
  • Unverified work cannot be submitted.
×

What we cannot accept

  • Coursework or NEA that has not been properly supervised, marked and authenticated.
  • Work completed independently with no approved person able to verify its authenticity.
  • Work from a tutor or provider who cannot meet the awarding body’s requirements.
  • A request made after booking where no arrangement was agreed in advance.
  • Late work where there is insufficient time to check, process or submit it.

Why authentication matters

Coursework and NEA must be demonstrably the candidate’s own work. The person responsible for assessment must be able to confirm how the work was supervised, marked and authenticated.

Submitting the work to us does not guarantee that we can enter or submit it. Acceptance is only confirmed once our exams team has reviewed the full arrangement.

Internal submission deadline

Verified work must reach us by

1 Marcheach academic year

Unless a different date has been agreed with us in writing, all completed, marked and authenticated coursework or NEA documentation must be received by this date. Our internal deadline allows time for checks, entries, paperwork and awarding-body submissions.

Prepare your documents

Evidence we may ask you to provide

You do not necessarily need every item below. We will tell you what is required after reviewing your enquiry.

01

Previous result evidence

  • Statement of Results or certificate.
  • Previous centre and candidate details.
  • Awarding body, specification and component information.
  • Previous NEA mark, grade or endorsement result.
02

Provider or tutor evidence

  • Confirmation of supervision and normal working arrangements.
  • Marking records and relevant assessment paperwork.
  • Candidate and assessor authentication declarations.
  • Provider or tutor contact details and qualifications, where requested.
Science qualifications

Science practicals and endorsements

Science requirements vary by qualification, awarding body and specification. Please check the exact entry before paying.

AL

A-level science

Biology · Chemistry · Physics

The Practical Endorsement is reported separately from the overall A-level grade. We do not currently provide new practical sessions, but we may be able to carry forward a previously awarded endorsement where the awarding body permits this.

  • Evidence of the previous endorsement will be required.
  • Carry forward must be checked before booking.
  • Some universities and science-related courses may require a Pass, so check their entry requirements carefully.
GC

GCSE and International GCSE science

Check the exact specification

Practical requirements are not identical across every GCSE and International GCSE specification. Some assess practical knowledge through written papers, while others may include practical, alternative-to-practical or centre-based requirements.

  • We can only accept a previous practical result where the awarding body allows it.
  • We do not currently provide new science practical sessions.
  • Email us with the board, subject and specification code before booking.
!
Do not assume a previous mark or practical result can be transferred.

Carry-forward rules depend on the qualification, component, awarding body and previous entry. We will contact you if further evidence is needed, but the candidate remains responsible for supplying it by the required deadline.

Before you book

How the process works

Following these steps helps us confirm your arrangement before any exam fees are paid.

Check your qualification

Confirm the subject, exam board, specification code and NEA or practical component.

Gather your evidence

Collect previous results, provider details, tutor information and authentication records.

Email us first

Send the information to the Exams Officer. Email is the fastest method because our phone lines are busy.

Wait for confirmation

We will review the arrangement and confirm in writing whether we can support it.

Book and submit

Only book once approved, then provide all completed evidence and work by the agreed deadline.

Acceptance is only confirmed in writing.

Payment for an exam entry does not automatically confirm that we can accept coursework, NEA, a spoken component or a practical endorsement.

Official information

Awarding-body rules can change, so candidates should check current guidance for their qualification.

Need us to check your NEA arrangement?

Email the Exams Officer before booking and include your subject, exam board, specification code, previous result or learning provider, and the arrangement you need.
